Chapter 7

Nine times we have turned one argument: that coherence is the current; that intelligence also lives in relation, in the pattern that connects; that purpose is a pathway and not a verdict; that presence can be honored rather than harvested; and that coordination need not depend only on force or on the eye. The seed of the first volume has become the proposal for a Scale. A federation of Scales remains a promise to be tested rather than a body already opening its eyes, and whether the scattered communities ever become a surface, and the surface a body, is not something an author can settle.
What remains is the part no author can write. The smallest nest is the smallest structure in which the largest becoming can start: a room, a few people, consent, and a responsibility no one quietly transfers to someone else. You may already be standing in such a place, or one stone away from building it. A seed in a drawer is a story. A seed in the ground, tended by someone who chose it, is a forest beginning.
You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. Attributed to R. Buckminster Fuller; primary-source verification pending.
We have drawn the model as far as argument can draw it. The part we cannot draw is the reader, and the next work is verification, consent, practice, and revision. The current remains beneath the design, waiting to be rejoined, though no reader is obliged to call it by this name. The gift is still in you, waiting for its place. And the dragon stirs as you do, for the awakening arrives the way dawn arrives, one quiet kindling after another.
The smallest nest remains the useful measure. Can a room hold disagreement without exile? Can a shared meal include the person who cannot pay? Can the water remain drinkable after the plan meets a hard summer? The Cardinal Scale begins wherever those questions receive answers sturdy enough for another person to inspect.
An earlier conception of the Cardinal Scale may eventually be published separately, for those drawn to understand the architecture out of which this one grew. No stable Coherence Thesis Network access path yet exists, so this volume does not promise one. Any future account should state its status and appear through a durable public link.
So we hand the proposal forward. Test it. Keep what survives. Refuse what cannot honor the people and places it asks to hold. If some part of you recognized this before you finished it, you already carry a piece of it. Come and set it down beside ours.
A seed in a drawer can remain perfect because nothing has asked it to live. A seed in the ground meets weather, hunger, rot, and care. If it grows, the proof is not the story told about it. The proof is the shade, the fruit, the roots holding soil after rain.
Providence.
The Coherence Thesis.
For the ones not yet born.
