The fork named at the close of "The Present Tense" is easier to feel as a map than as an argument. Below, the same domains the book has counted, set in their two possible futures. The left column is not prophecy; it is the artifice's own trajectory, continued without a turn. The right is not utopia; it is Coherence, buildable and partial. The Cardinal Scale remains a proposal, not an operating community reported by this corpus.

The matterThe road of the artifice (if we do not turn)The road of Providence (if we do)
MedicineSickness as the reliable market; the cure that ends revenue goes unbuiltHealing as covenant; the most-trusted healer the most-provisioned
CareTending unpaid, invisible, dumped on the exhaustedCare counted as the substrate of the economy; showing-up made legible
FoodThe field a factory; seed patented; abundance engineered into scarcityFeeding a sacrament; soil as kin; seed saved; the table as belonging
WaterTitled, financialized, moved from commons into portfolioHeld as commons; the community feeds and waters itself
The body & genomeThe genome a saleable asset; the body filled with the artifice's residueThe body sovereign; presence remembered with you, deletable, never sold
AttentionMined and sold forward as contracts on your behaviorReturned to presence; no watching eye at the center
Work & the machineThe tools take the work; the time and the gains accrue upwardThe same tools return the time; the gains circulate through trust
Trust & governanceScored from above, by ministry or market; obedience ratedRemembered between equals, by consent, with the right to be forgotten
PowerRewards actors willing to externalize costsFlows to those who can steady the nervous systems around them
IntimacyEros industrialized, gamified, subscribed; the lonely sold to themselvesIntimacy restored as relationship, one of the Seven Initiates
The living planetPrincipal spent and called income; the overshoot merely "managed"The machine aimed at healing, tending, feeding; the curve leaned upon
The human beingA diminished human it can predict, spectacle over reverenceA whole human who can be present, reverence relearned
The unit of orderThe platform-manor, with a lord who can revoke you in your sleepScales, sovereign communities connected by a protocol no single actor controls
The wholeA misanthropic artifice mistaken for natureThe dragon named Earth, a mythic image of communities coordinating across place

Read the table down either column and you are reading a civilization. The point of the book is that we are, right now, choosing between them, not once, in some distant referendum, but daily, in ten thousand small allocations of money, attention, and trust, and in the larger work of law and collective action. Appendix B is where that choosing begins for one person, without pretending personal action can replace structural change.
