9 · Animistic Awareness

With the ninth tenet the path opens outward. Animistic Awareness is the opening of perception to realize that every thought, every feeling, and every material form has its own being, one that can be communicated with, and transformed, by being known for what it is. It is the threshold at which the world ceases to be inert and becomes, everywhere, alive and addressable: at which a feeling is no longer only a state to be managed but a presence to be met, and a place is no longer only a location but a someone. This is not a regression into superstition but an advance into relationship, the recovery of a sensitivity the extractive mind had to numb in order to treat the living world as a warehouse.

Some traditions understand the claim literally. Others receive it as an ethical or poetic stance. This volume does not settle the metaphysics. A feeling may be met rather than immediately suppressed. A river may be approached as a relation with history, limits, and claims upon those who use it. The practice begins in conduct before it reaches metaphysics.
